Presented by Art Production Fund and Rockefeller Center, this Art in Focus exhibition brings Hank Willis Thomas' work into the public spaces of Rockefeller Center, including 45, 30, 50, 10, and 1 Rockefeller Plaza, from July 6 through October 6, 2026. The presentation features richly patterned quilts made from sports jerseys alongside sculptures drawing on athletic imagery and symbolism.

Saverio and Daisy (Navel) explores the shifting of perspectives through audience participation and interaction. This sculpture is one of a series of bench-artworks by Thomas that replicate the outline of iconic cartoon speech balloons - in this case a playful thought bubble. Shown alongside Ernest and Ruth (Exuberant Pink) on the new esplanade in Biidaasige Park, Thomas's sculptures will frame the impressive Toronto skyline and act as windows onto our urban experience.

Join conceptual artist Hank Willis Thomas for a public conversation exploring how artists document society and shape what it means to be American. Presented on the 25th anniversary of September 11th, Thomas will also reflect on love, language, and unity as tools for collective healing — drawing on his own practice, including his neon work, Love Over Rules, sculpture Community, and photo-based work, Pledge, on view in For the People, By the People: America at 250. A moderated Q&A facilitated by Rehema Barber, KIA Director of Curatorial Affairs, will follow.

Hank Willis Thomas: LOVERULES — From the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and His Family Foundation will be exhibited at the Zimmerli Art Museum. This exhibition brings together nearly 90 works by conceptual artist and activist Hank Willis Thomas (born 1976; Plainfield, New Jersey). Surveying the artist’s most iconic artworks across a range of media, the exhibition explores how images shape perception, identity, and values. By questioning what feels familiar, Thomas connects historical moments of resistance to our lives today and invites us to remain open to change.

New York Live Arts is honored to welcome visionary Hank Willis Thomas back to the Ford Foundation Live Gallery!

In the case of these three works, Thomas sourced archival photographs taken in the 1940s for the U.S. Office of War Information and the U.S. War Relocation Authority. These works speak to the ongoing dialogue in Thomas’s work that examines what it means to be an American, and asks how we reconcile the complexities and contradictions of history and national identity.

The FLAG Art Foundation’s Spotlight exhibition series includes new or never-before-exhibited artworks accompanied by commissioned pieces of writing. It is the hope of this series to create focused and thoughtful dialogues between the visual arts and critics, scholars, poets, etc. In this iteration, the Spotlight features Hank Willis Thomas and a text by Ashley James, Curator of Contemporary Art at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum.

With These Hands: A Memorial to the Enslaved and Exploited serves as a reminder of a rarely spoken part of the college's history. It recognizes and brings those previously excluded members of the community into the Davidson College story. We do that with narratives and with physical space.

Montgomery Square is a new site dedicated to the Montgomery Decade that changed the world. From 1955 to 1965, Black residents with extraordinary courage and determination stood up against racial injustice in Montgomery and sparked a movement that transformed our country and the world.

A permanent memorial to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King for the city of Boston, in collaboration with Mass Design Group. Unveiled January 13, 2023, at Boston Commons, MA.

“A connection point and large-scale gesture that inspires us to come together” was Hank Willis Thomas’ and Coby Kennedy's inspiration behind their grandiose sculpture REACH. Now at home in O’Hare International Airport, the larger-than-life sculpture is suspended 34 feet off the ground.

Permanently installed at the Miami Underline, Duality extends its arm and triumphantly displays its two fingers. The positioning of the fingers can be interpreted as a “V" for victory, a fun peace sign, or a vulgar insult.

A permanent installation on the East and West entrances of the new Judkins Park Station, the first in Seattle’s Central District and part of Central Puget Sound Transit Authority (Sound Transit).

A permanent installation located at the entrance to the Brooklyn Bridge and commissioned by the City of New York’s Percent for Art Program as part of a broader revitalization of the Tillary Street corridor.

Glowing 6-foot-6-inch letters spell out LOVE OVER RULES on the exterior wall of the Salma Family Building in the heart of the Yerba Buena neighborhood.

All Power to All People is a provocative artwork combining the Afro pick and the Black Power salute, both icons of Black identity and empowerment. When Hank conceived of a monumental Afro pick with a raised fist, he wanted to make an object that spoke specifically to African Americans, illustrative of the artist's longstanding investigation into public art's role in shaping collective discourse and societal values.

For Freedoms is an artist collective that centers art and creativity as a catalyst for transformative connection and collective liberation. By wielding the power of art, they aim to deepen and expand our capacity to interrogate what is and imagine what could be.

The Wide Awakes believe art has the power to wake people up. Artists are always at the vanguard of social change, and art is a tool to educate, motivate, and activate our citizenry, inspire us, open our hearts and minds, and transform our lives.

Question Bridge is a multimedia exhibition that fosters honest expression and healing dialogue. First, one person asks a question looking into the camera, as if they are talking directly to another person. Later, another person responds by talking directly into a camera. This question-answer exchange makes people more comfortable expressing their deeply held feelings on topics that divide, unite, and puzzle.

Everyone has their own truth, what is yours? In Search of the Truth is an interactive project comprised of a touring, giant inflatable speech bubble – video recording booth – traveling the world…In Search of The Truth.

Formed in 2014, The Writing on the Wall is housed within the fabric of the radically imaginative justice work of Incarceration Nations Network (INN): a global network and think tank that supports and popularizes innovative prison reform efforts around the world. 

The Gun Violence Memorial Project creates space to gather, remember, and act in light of the ongoing gun violence crisis. A collaboration between Boston-based MASS Design Group in partnership with the gun violence prevention organization Purpose Over Pain. It comprises four glass houses, each built of 700 clear bricks, a reference to the average number of gun deaths every week in the United States.
